“Lone Star Steel” is my 2023 breakout single—a historical fiction tribute to the real Lone Star Steel mill right in my hometown of Lone Star, Texas. It tells the story of a WWII Navy vet riding the train home, stepping into the blazing heat of the mill, grinding out 80-hour weeks to build a life for his family, and carrying that unbreakable East Texas grit forward. The hook “hard as Lone Star Steel” isn’t just about metal—it’s the toughness, resilience, and pride of the folks who shaped the piney woods and made communities like mine thrive after the war.
This track put me on the map in a big way: landed on 34+ Spotify playlists, reached over 2.1 million listeners via those playlists, racked up 146K+ streams (and counting), spiked my monthly listeners by 50K at the time, cracked the top 200 Americana worldwide, and even hit #10 on iTunes Belgium Country in 2024. For an East Texas song about a local mill, that international love still blows my mind.

Where the Idea Came From
I was born in Lone Star, Texas, and grew up just down the road near Lake O’ the Pines in the thick of the piney woods. That mill was always part of the backdrop—smoke on the horizon, trains hauling pipe, families built around those long, hot shifts. The Lone Star Steel plant fired up post-WWII (roots back to wartime expansion in the '40s), becoming a lifeline for East Texas: jobs, community pride, and hard-earned paychecks despite the grind and occasional tough labor history.
I wanted to honor that generation—like the men from my dad’s era—who came home from war, rolled up their sleeves, and poured everything into providing. I dug into the mill’s real story: the post-war boom, the furnace heat, the unbreakable spirit that kept families going. The line “hard as Lone Star Steel” hit me like a freight train—it captured everything I grew up feeling about East Texas toughness. From there, I wove the fictional vet’s journey: discharge papers, train ride home, first brutal shift, and the quiet pride in building something lasting.

Building the Lyrics
The story stays simple and true—no Hollywood shine, just real life. Discharge in hand, stepping off the train, walking into that inferno for the family waiting. Lyrics lean on the heat, the hours, the satisfaction of a hard day’s work. “Hard as Lone Star Steel” carries the weight—it’s the character forged in those mills, the same grit I see in East Texas folks every day.
Even though it’s historical fiction, it felt deeply personal. These are the stories I heard growing up—resilience, family first, small-town heart. No shortcuts, just honest country songwriting.
Recording the Track
We tracked it at KSIJ Studios in Gladewater—the same historic spot where Elvis and Johnny Cash have recorded, which added its own layer of Texas music magic. Producer Chad Mauldin (Mauldin Productions) nailed my vision from rough demos, adding just the right touches without losing the raw edge.
The players were killer: Milo Deering (Eagles session ace) on acoustic guitar and fiddle, Jeff Shelton (Legend) on drums, Jackson Mauldin on bass, Raymie Moore on banjo and fiddle. I sang lead, keeping it driving and heartfelt—classic country with room for the story to hit home.
The Release & What It Sparked
Dropped in 2023, and it caught fire quicker than I ever dreamed. Playlists embraced it, streams climbed, and that Belgium chart nod? Surreal for a song about a hometown mill that’s now quiet (plant idled years back, fully closed around 2020). But the real win? Live shows—crowds still belt it, connect to the pride. One venue owner, Darlene Jacobs at Five D Steakhouse in Avinger, TX, booked me after hearing it; her family worked there for generations. Those moments remind me why I do this.
